LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK

Lake Mburo is Uganda’s fourth national park and an often overlooked gem.

A mixture of lakes, wetlands and acacia savannah, it is perhaps the best place in Uganda to see Africa’s largest antelope, the eland.

A lack of large mammals is compensated by the presence of such beauties as impala and eland and the park’s unique ecology.

WILDLIFE AND BIRDING

Lake Mburo National Park is only 260 km2 but supports 68 species of mammal and 315 species of bird.

The park contains five lakes, of which Lake Mburo is the largest, and significant wetlands. Together, these make up more then 20% of the park, the remainder being open savannah, acacia woodlands and acacia dotted savannah (the only such ecology in Uganda).

Many tour operators bypass Mburo and head straight onto Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi, meaning that despite its size, you are much more likely to avoid crowds than in other, larger parks.

Lake Mburo Wildlife

  • ake Mburo is the only place in Uganda where the impala is found.
  • Herds of buffalo and zebra are common but there are no lions, giraffes or elephants.
  • Great opportunities to see crocodiles, hippopotamus, Burchell’s zebra, topi, bushbuck, oribi, defassa waterbuck and sitatunga.
  • Only two primate species are present in the park: vervet monkeys and olive baboons.
  • Carnivores in Mburo include hyena, leopard, jackal and otters.
  • Of the 315 bird species there are 60 water specialists, 5 endemics and 26 lakeshore and papyrus swamp species.

Activities at the Park

In addition to game drives and guided walks, a ‘must-do’ at Lake Mburo is a boat trip.

These launches provide great viewing and birding, allowing an uninterrupted view of many animals as they come to drink.

A wooden hide overlooking a saltlick provides great viewing of a variety of animals.
