Rwanda-Gorillas

Safari Overview

This four day tour is based around one day’s gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

Four days sounds like a long journey for just a few hours with the gorillas, but Bwindi lies far from Kampala and most visitors feel that it is worth the effort.

Note that permits must be booked well in advance (3 – 6 months) to guarantee trekking.

Itinerary

Day 1: Kampala – Bwindi
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to roughly half of the world’s mountain gorillas and is one of only two national parks in Uganda where you can see these magnificent creatures.

This is a fast and tiring safari but worth every second, should you be lucky enough to see the gorillas.

An 8 hour drive from Kampala takes up the whole of the first day, together with an evening rest to prepare you for the next day.

Day 2: Bwindi National Park
We wake early, enjoy breakfast and begin our trek. It can take several hours or as little as twenty minutes to find the gorillas – it all depends on where they happen to be.

Details of gorilla trekking are covered on our gorilla safari page, so please click here to learn more.
Day 3: Bwindi – Bunyonyi
We leave Bwindi behind and head towards the beautiful Lake Bunyonyi. We pass through what is East Africa’s most spectacular scenery, the highland rain forests. Filled with primates and exotic birds, this really is an incredible drive.

The afternoon is spent on a foot safari around the magnificent crater lake, Bunyonyi.

Day 4: Bunyonyi – Kampala
We make the long journey back to Kampala, where the tour ends.

Activities at the Park

Hiking is the main attraction at Elgon. Day and four day hikes across the peaks are superb. Most trails now include the Sipi Falls, hot springs in the caldera and the cave paintings at Budadiri.

When to visit

The lower slopes are fine throughout the year.

The drier months (June – August and December – March) are best for hiking.
